Seven

The safe house ended up being in the northern part of Colorado Springs, a lovely rancher in a family neighborhood. Though it was weird staying in the same house with human Mateo, we each had our own bedroom. Rather than try to make dinner at the unfamiliar place, we stopped for takeout on the way there.

I still felt unsettled with what had happened to Hank, so, after we ate, I immersed myself in the task of adding the new stones to my cuff bracelet, hoping that concentrating on the work would make the horrific flashbacks go away. Ren and Mateo both stayed glued to her laptop as they continued to search for more facial recognition matches.

Finally, when I was done with my bracelet and the two of them looked as if computer screens were permanently imprinted on their retinas, Mateo yawned and stretched. “I think that does it.”

Ren copied him. “Yeah. I’m beat. I’m off to bed.”

“Did you find any more matches?” I asked Mateo after she left.

Mateo shook his head. “No, just the one—Bernadette Osmund. Derek wants me to check her out tomorrow.”

Can we go with you? Ruby asked eagerly.

When I repeated he question, Mateo said, “I don’t think it’s a good idea. I have a guard coming to relieve me here tomorrow morning. You’ll be safer here.”

I frowned, disliking that idea as much as Ruby did. “But we can’t help you if we’re stuck here. What can we do?”

Mateo raised an eyebrow. “You can practice putting that shield in place.”

Wrong answer. “I can work on that while you’re driving. Besides, you need us.” At his skeptical look, I added, “This Bernadette is part demon, right?” At his nod, I said, “Then Ruby will be able to read her mind and let me know what she’s thinking—and if she’s telling the truth.”

She’s got you there, Ruby snarked.

He opened his mouth to argue, then obviously realized I was right.

Mateo sighed. “Okay, but you have to promise to work on the shield in the car.”

I grinned. “Don’t worry, I will.”
